The Shopify platform determines the product variant limit.
Currently, the platform allows up to 250 variants per product, giving merchants more flexibility when offering a wide range of product options. To support this, our theme catalogue has been updated to keep product pages running smoothly even with a large number of variants.
Supported Themes
To start, we recommend checking your theme version compatibility. The support for this feature starts with the following versions:
- Parallax v7.1.0
- Responsive v10.1.0
- Retina v8.1.0
- Vino v1.0.0
This is currently not supported in Flex, Turbo, and Superstore themes.
After updating the theme, your storefront should be able to display products with up to 250 variants.
Check out our guides here on how to update your theme.
How can I create a separate page for each product variant?
After updating the theme to a supported version, the new product template "high-variant" will also be available in your product editor.
This template works in conjunction with Shopify’s Combined Listings app. This app is currently available only on Plus and enterprise commerce plans in Shopify.
Using the high-variant template allows you to display multiple related products under a single listing. With this process, you can display up to 2000 variants in a single listing. The complete setup process can be found in this Shopify guide.
Using the high-variant template
- Go to your Shopify Admin > Products and open the product you want to apply the template to
- In the template selector, choose high-variant
- The supported version of the theme must be published to see this option
- Save the changes
Known issues and limitations
Your theme may not be compatible with products with over 250 variants
- In your Shopify admin's product editor, you may see a similar message above your variants list. If you are already using a supported theme version, you can dismiss this message - the combined listing should be able to display within your theme.
-
If you have an older version published, we recommend 1) updating your theme, or 2) publishing the newer version if you've already done the former.
Unable to add blocks in the high-variant product template
- Depending on your theme, this may be an expected behavior in the template. We recommend creating a support ticket so we can investigate this for you.
- If "Add block" is unsupported on your theme, we recommend using the "Default product" template instead.
