Adding Recommended Products
All product pages in the Flex theme include the option to enable 'Recommended Products' as a content block.
Shopify has introduced dynamic, automatically generated product recommendations that can be enabled as a section on product pages within your theme. Products are recommended based on an algorithm that predicts the most relevant products based on the product a customer is interacting with.
The algorithm used to generate these products uses sales data and product descriptions to show a variety of products that are alike or often bought together. Because of this, the product recommendations improve over time as new orders and product data become available.
The product will have to be in a Collection in order for recommended products to show up. If the product is not in a collection, then no recommended products will display.
In order to add a 'Recommended Products' content block to your product page, head into Customize (your Theme Editor) > choose 'Product Pages' in the drop-down page selector. Your theme editor on the left will then update with the product page settings. Under Sections > Product, scroll down to Add Content and select Recommended Products.
Since the Recommended Products get added as a draggable content block, you will then be able to move and re-order the block around.
While you can select the width, top/bottom spacing, and animation in the content block settings, after adding recommended products as a content block, you can configure the rest of the settings using the Recommended Products section settings under Sections > Recommended Products.
Recommended Products Settings
Within the recommended products section settings, you can decide how many products you'd like to display, choose the layout design, and adjust the image height.
Show dynamic recommendations
You'll need to enable the 'show dynamic recommendations' setting in order for them to show up!
Layout
In the 'layout' setting, you can either choose to display your recommended products as a grid or slider.
Heading
A 'heading' of "You may also like" will show up by default. You can change this heading to something else if you'd like, or completely remove it if you don't want to have one.
Products per row
You can choose between 2-4 products per row for your recommended products.
Limit products
You can limit the number of products you'd like to appear in the recommended products. Choose between 2 - 10.
Align to height/Product image height
While we recommend uploading product images that are the same size and orientation for consistency, you might have some that are a little different in size! If you enable the 'align to height' setting, this will match the height of all the thumbnail images of your recommended products, which you can adjust with the 'product image height' slider. This will help if your images look unaligned.
Specify Recommended Products
If you'd like certain products to show up as recommended products, you will need to create a specific collection! This will overwrite Shopify's algorithm meaning that the products won't display dynamically or improve over time.
Create the new collection and make note of the collection's handle. The collection's handle can be seen by clicking 'Edit Website SEO' within the collection itself:
More on collection handles here: find the collection handle →
Then, go back to your product and add a new tag that specifies the collection's handle:
meta-related-collection-handle-name
So in this example, since the collection handle is featured-sneakers, so in our example product: 'Flash Classic Sneaker' the tag to add would be meta-related-collection-featured-sneakers
The products in this collection should now be displayed in the Recommended Products section:
Mobile Layout
When viewed on a mobile device, if the 'products layout' is set to 'slider', it will still remain a slider! You can swipe through the images or click the left/right arrows.
If the 'products layout' is set to 'grid', the 'recommended products' will remain as a grid layout on mobile as well.
