Shopify's Recommended Products
Shopify has introduced dynamic, automatically generated product recommendations that can be enabled as a section on product pages within your theme. Products are recommended based on an algorithm that predicts the most relevant products based on the product a customer is interacting with.
The algorithm used to generate these products uses sales data and product descriptions to show a variety of products that are alike or often bought together. Because of this, the product recommendations improve over time as new orders and product data become available.
The product will have to be in a Collection in order for recommended products to show up. If the product is not in a collection, then no recommended products will display.

Enable Recommended Products
In order to enable the product recommendations, head into Customize (your Theme Editor) > choose 'Product Pages' in the drop-down page selector to navigate to a product page. The theme editor on the left will then update with the product page settings. Under Sections > click into Recommended Products and check off the 'Show dynamic recommendations' setting.
Within the product recommendation settings, you can update the 'heading,' 'products per row' and 'limit products' settings.
The heading will display center aligned above the products. Within the products per row setting, you can choose between 2 - 4 and limit products between 2 - 48.
How to Specify Recommended Products
If you'd like certain products to show up as recommended products, you will need to create a specific collection! This will overwrite Shopify's algorithm meaning that the products won't display dynamically or improve over time.
Create the related collection and make note of the collection's handle. The collection's handle can be seen by clicking 'Edit Website SEO' within the collection itself:
More on collection handles here: find the collection handle →
Then, go back to your product and add a new tag that specifies the collection's handle:
meta-related-collection-handle-name
So in this example, since the collection handle is featured-sneakers, so in our example product: 'Flash Classic Sneaker' the tag to add would be meta-related-collection-featured-sneakers
The products in this collection should now be displayed in the Recommended Products section:
