Are your product images looking kind of funny? Are you not familiar with image editing software? Thankfully there are some helpful in-house Shopify tools you can use from the Admin section of your store to get your products looking better!
All sorts of product image alignment issues can result from having product images without similar sizes and/or crop-styles.
One of the nice things about editing photos from your shop’s admin is that you are not editing the originals, so you can feel comfortable making your image adjustments in a low-stakes environment.
The name of the game is consistency. You want all your product images' dimensions to appear similar. This gives your store a professional, organized feel.
Once you have your product photos uploaded, give them some tags and add them to their appropriate collections. If you're starting out with product images that are not all the same size, in your Theme Editor (Customize), find the Collection page and enable the ‘Align height of product images’ setting. Take a look at your store and take note of which photos look good and which ones look…not so good.
Head back into your Shopify Admin > Products. Click on a product with an image that you want to edit. Hover over the image and you will see a 3 dot menu that you can click on. From the menu, select edit image.
The Crop tool allows us to only keep the part of the image we want. For example, if your image has a lot of unnecessary blank space, select Crop and position the crop box over only the parts of the image you want to keep!
To change the size of a photo, select Resize. Here you can change the dimensions of the photo to be consistent with the rest of the photos in your store.
Additionally, you can rotate and draw on your images as well.
Getting your images looking good is not an exact science and be aware the Shopify software attempts to resize images according to the site's framework even after you have edited your images. Sometimes this is immensely helpful and other times it an give you unexpected results.
Just keep tinkering: the Crop and Resize tools alone you can get your product images looking better!
